Wildfire on Stara Planina affects more than 150 hectares

Firefighters in Serbia are continuing to battle a large vegetation fire near the village of Osmakovo on Stara Planina. The blaze broke out on Sunday afternoon and spread across a wide area.
According to information released so far, more than 150 hectares of low vegetation have been affected, along with part of a pine forest. Conditions on Monday morning were reported to be significantly better than the previous day, but the fire has not yet been fully extinguished.
A large number of firefighters from the Pirot area are working at the scene, supported by members of the Pirot volunteer fire service. Crews have managed to prevent the flames from spreading further toward the village of Osmakovo.
The operation remains difficult because of occasionally strong winds, which can reignite hotspots and push the fire into surrounding vegetation. Reports from the area also say that several abandoned auxiliary buildings on the edge of the village were damaged or destroyed.
Fire crews are continuing efforts to bring the affected area under control and prevent the blaze from spreading again.
